Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain

The phone in my parents’ house keeps ringing and ringing. Its piercing sound fills every bit of space available but they insist I leave it and so I do. We let it ring until there’s nothing left to resist but doesn’t it feel so counterintuitive to leave something alone when it’s calling out for you? I’m fighting my instincts every time. Luckily tonight the sound of the heavy rain outweighs any of the empty calls coming for us. Precipitation is all anyone can talk about. Climate change as clickbait as the real thing. The sky wasn’t so grey this time last year. I take a run right when it starts back up again. Why are we so afraid of getting wet? I like it when the streets are this empty, when our neighborhood’s this green. Dark lush and alive for once.
